Same Sex Adoption

Throughout the United States of America and in various nations of the world, there are over thousands of infants and young children waiting to be adopted into a home and finally belong to a caring family. In recent years, as the gay rights movements has been progressing and picking up momentum, same sex adoption, or gay adoptions, has been steadily increasing in the United States every year. The number of gay adoptions has also been increasing throughout different countries of the world. And although there are, and always will be, opposition to gay rights and especially against same sex adoption, the gay rights movement is one that is being heard and felt throughout our nation as well as other nations around the world. Many people may feel that a same sex adoption will not be a stable and healthy environment for a child and that only traditional and conventional homes should have the right to adopt a child.

However, as with any other adoption, gay adoptions will have to go through the same interviewing and testing procedures as well as background checks in order to successfully adopt a child.

The term ‘gay adoptions’ is most often associated with the image of two gay males trying to adopt a child. However in recent years, same sex adoption has gradually come to mean any two individuals, whether they are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or even transgendered, trying to start a family by adopting a child. In essence, gay adoptions have become the adoption of a child by any couple who do not fit the traditional and conventional definition of a male and a female.

Though the gay rights movement has been in effect for some time now, the issue of same sex adoption is a relatively recent and modern matter in our society. As the gay rights movement is becoming stronger and making more progress, gays are becoming more open and comfortable, settling down with a partner and starting families. As gay rights are gradually becoming more and more accepted in society, so are gay adoptions. Same sex adoption is eventually becoming less of a concern in society and more of an accepted practice throughout United States adoption agencies. As more and more people around the nation are becoming enlightened and informed about homosexuality, gay adoptions have been on a steady increase in the past years. Before the gay rights movement, homosexuals were treated as if they were diseased and sometimes even criminal, and nobody would have even thought of same sex adoption.

As our society progresses on and continues to develop groundbreaking advancements in technology and medicine, evolution in social values, morals, and ethics must be achieved as well. American society has truly made an unprecedented amount of progress throughout the years with the several civil rights movements that have made their mark in American history. The acceptance of gay adoptions is a huge step in the gay rights movement which is well on its way to making its own place in history books.
